January Program
The January program will be a presentation on carbide by an expert in the industry. If you have questions about carbide, and it’s use and performance in the tools that are available, I’m told that this will be a worthwhile presentation. Have your questions ready! A solid carbide router bit will be donated by the presenter and raffled off.
The 13th annual One Special Christmas Auction was a big success and ours member’s contributions played a key role in generating the money that was raised for this worthy cause. Some of the items donated by our members, and their selling prices, are listed below. Hopefully this list is complete and accurate, if not, let me know and I’ll publish the additional information in a future newsletter.

Letter to the Membership from Michael Rosenberg
January 2002
To All Members of Charlotte Woodworkers Association,
I hope all your holidays went well and you are looking forward to a new year of good health and happiness. I look forward to the upcoming year for our club and hope that there are lively discussions, entertaining and educational speakers and idea sharing among the members. I have asked you what you would like to see from the club and I would like to list some of these ideas along with some of my own. The list is not inclusive but rather ways that might improve the overall satisfaction of the association.
1. Question and answer sessions during the meetings. This could help members to share their knowledge surrounding woodworking.
2. Increased involvement from the members in leading discussions and the monthly education sessions.
3. Increased hands on seminars. This could include Saturday mornings at the woodworking shop or at individual member’s shops.
4. Recognize new members and guests at the meetings to make everyone feel welcome.
5. Develop a mentor program utilizing the members of the club. Members would be available to spend one-on-one time with someone who has an interest in learning or increasing their skill in certain areas of woodworking. A list could be generated and printed in the newsletter for contact information.
6. Newsletter improvement by offering articles, tips, and Internet web site listings that are generated by the membership.
7. Shop tours- this has been discussed and done in the past and it might be worthy to have 1-2 people in charge of setting up these tours.
8. Community awareness improvement through local fairs and other avenues. A way in which the members could spotlight their work and the clubs involvement.
9. Combined seminars with other woodworking clubs within our region.
10. Look at the current meeting arrangement and make any necessary changes.
11. Increase awareness of woodworking classes within our region and combine travel for members who wish to attend similar classes.
I hope these and other ideas that you might have will help to make your involvement in the association a better one. Please feel free to call me or email me to discuss any ideas or concerns. My phone number is 704-643-7612 and email is Rosinbag@carolina.rr.com
Happy New Year!
Michael Rosenberg
A Note from outgoing Treasurer, Brent Richardson
Thanks for the opportunity to serve as Treasurer for the CWA since August of 1999. I have enjoyed working with you in this capacity and invite you to support your newly elected Treasurer, Neil Brunck, in the same manner.
We’d like to thank all of the officers who served the association in 2001. To Past President Don Ogden, VP Mike Rosenberg (returning as President ), Secretary Maxine Pennell, and Treasurer Brent Richardson, we all appreciate the time you’ve invested in the management of the Charlotte Woodworker’s Association. Thanks!
A Rewarding Role
By Wayne L. Manahan
An association grows stronger only by the strength and commitment of it’s membership. When I joined CWA in 2001, I knew that associations didn’t run themselves. I knew that it was the people that ultimately make everything happen.
So when someone said that Dwight Hartsell needed someone to take over the job of providing refreshments since he was recovering from a medical problem, and no one was willing to volunteer, I did. Monk Bridges offered his help to me in handling this role.
I’ve enjoyed bringing refreshments. I’ve met a lot of our members, and have gotten a chance to talk with many, even if just for a minute. Because I took over this job, I met people who invited to join the North Carolina Woodturners Association. That has also been a very valuable and enlightening result of performing this simple service to provide refreshments (totally reimbursed, of course) for our monthly meetings.
Now I’m taking on the role of secretary, and I’d really like to have someone else take over the responsibility for providing refreshments. It’s a fun job, doesn’t take much time each month, and it adds a lot to our meetings. If you’d be interested, Give me a call, send an e-mail, or stop and talk with me at the meeting.
Our association now has a link to our site on the WoodCentral Web site under guilds. The link to WoodCentral is:

An increase in dues was approved by the membership of The Charlotte Woodworkers Association. Dues for renewing members will be $25.00 for 2002. The Membership dues for new members was increased to $30.00.
E-mail Option for receiving “Sawdust”
Many of our members have e-mail. If any of those who do would like to receive “The Charlotte Sawdust” newsletter by e-mail instead of by regular mail, please ask to have this addressed at an upcoming meeting. Sending correspondence by e-mail can be faster, cheaper, and as reliable as by regular mail. With this issue I have adopted a single column format that makes the newsletter easier to read on the computer. Hopefully there will be some interest in this option and it can result in cost savings for our association and added convenience for some of the membership. For members without e-mail, or for those who prefer to receive the printed material, the newsletter would still be offered in the conventional printed form, sent via US Mail.
DeWalt Presentation
Jack Hays, Representative
DeWalt Industrial Power tools will make a short presentation at the January Woodworking meeting. The presentation will take about 10 minutes and will cover new exciting products and research being conducted by DeWalt Industrial Power tools, followed by a short questions and answer session. Your time would be greatly appreciated along with your feedback to DeWalt. I look forward to seeing you on January 21
Bylaws Update, Ratified
At the November meeting on 11/19/2001 the revised by-laws were ratified by the CWA membership in attendance. The most significant change is the increase in the price of dues. This increase was necessary to cover the increased costs being absorbed by the CWA for items such as newsletter publishing and mailing, meeting speakers, and meeting refreshments. These new dues are also in line with other woodworking associations such as those in Raleigh and in Greenville, SC.
A copy of the updated by-laws is included with this mailing.
